In the wake of Fukushima disaster, energy experts now agree that securing Europe’s future electricity supply will require an increasing convergence between existing fossil fuel sources and the fast-growing renewable generation sector. Nowhere is this fusing of interests required more than in Germany, in the light of the government’s decision to phase out all nuclear power by 2022. The case for integration is now compelling and is something that an increasing number of countries are going to have... [more]
Ocean Power Technologies, Inc. has signed an exclusive agreement with a consortium of three leading Japanese companies to develop a demonstration wave power station in Japan. The Japanese consortium comprises Idemitsu Kosan Co., Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., and Japan Wind Development Co. (the “Consortium”).

Thanet Earth is the massive £80 million greenhouse development covering 67 hectares, which will comprise of seven huge glasshouses, an on-site pack-house and a visitors centre. It will ensure that fresh UK-grown, rather than imported, goods are supplied to the consumer, dramatically reducing the number of 'food-miles' that fresh produce currently travels 'from fork to fork'.
Kingspan Environmental has been contracted to supply pumping stations to Thanet Earth in Kent. Norfolk-based Bingham H... [more]
Renewable energy effectively uses natural resources such as sunlight, wind, rain, tides and geothermal heat, which are naturally replenished. Renewable energy technologies range from solar power, wind power, hydroelectricity/micro hydro, biomass and bio-fuels for transportation.
In recent years, about 19% of global final energy consumption came from renewables, with 13% coming from traditional biomass, like wood-burning. Hydropower was the next largest renewable source, providing three percen... [more]
According to a new report from Lux Research, "Alternative Power and Energy Storage State of the Market Q4 2008: Weaving the $65 Billion Power Web", the power grid today is wasteful, costly, inefficient and dumb – and ill-equipped to address many pressing energy issues, from the need to focus on climate change and carbon cost, to the demand for high reliability. However, the advent of distributed generation, distributed storage, and distributed intelligence will change power infrastructure into a... [more]
Ocean Power Technologies, Inc. has received a US$2.0 million award from the US Department of Energy (DoE), in support of OPT’s wave power project in Reedsport, Oregon.
The DoE grant will be used to help fund the fabrication, assembly and factory testing of the first PowerBuoy® to be installed at the Reedsport site. This system will be a 150 kilowatt-rated PB150 PowerBuoy, major portions of which will be fabricated and integrated in Oregon. This is the first award for the building of ocean wav... [more]
